Sustainability in the Black Community – OOLI BEAUTY

Sustainability in the Black Community

When you hear or see the word sustainability what do you think of?

In our world, we immediately think of sustainability in two capacities:

  1. Sustainability in beauty
  2. Sustainability in the Black community

Both are critical to our society.

In this blog post, we’re going to dig into the power of sustainability in the Black community.

Essentially, sustainability in our Black communities means maintaining and elevating neighborhoods, whether it’s in the capacity of nature - like community gardens, outdoor classrooms, murals, or simply by making sure we’re living in environmentally friendly neighborhoods.

We ACT is a great organization and source for helping people thrive in healthy neighborhoods.

We admire their seriousness when it comes to researching, advocating, and taking action in terms of the environment.

Healthy neighborhoods are critical in our small towns and big cities.

And speaking of big cities, despite the fact of there being more places to shop for food, there are still people in the Black community who aren’t getting access to healthy food.

This is where initiatives like Dream Out Loud step in.

DOL’s mission is to help people in marginalized communities have access to a healthy, equitable food system.

There are several other initiates out there who are committed to helping in the form of:

  • Reproductive justice
  • Black-owned land preservation
  • Farming
  • Birthing
  • Food education and MORE!

There are even initiatives that promote nature like “Outdoor Afro.”

This initiative is serious about getting more Black people involved in:

  • Swimming
  • Biking
  • Kayaking
  • Fishing
  • Camping
  • Hiking

At the end of the day, it’s critical that Black people everywhere have access to a healthy and thriving environment.

We’re admiring the change-makers who are making this a possibility.

So, tell us, what are your thoughts on Black sustainability? Or are there any initiatives that you love to support in your own city or state?
